Rebels with a Cause: Shaking Things Up for the Next Generation

In a world that often feels too loud and too busy, there’s a quiet army of rebels working behind the scenes to make a real difference. They’re not wielding guitars (okay, sometimes they are), and they’re not storming the charts, but they are changing the world for the next generation—right here in Columbus, Ohio. This cause is about more than charity; it’s a movement. It’s for anyone searching for a way to give back, find purpose, and champion something bigger than themselves. It’s about building brighter futures for kids who need a little extra support to reach their full potential.

From Merry Go Round To Battle Columbus: A Classic Cause Gets A Rock 'N' Roll Facelift

The Childhood League's annual Merry Go Round Gala, now “Battle Columbus” is Columbus' longest-running fundraiser and has been the League's highly anticipated tradition since 1949. League Members secure lucrative sponsorships, host stunning live and silent auctions, manage relationships with vendors, host entertainment, and plan all aspects of this elevated evening for 450+ members of the community. This event raises approximately 10% of The Center's annual operating budget. They pour their hearts into making this event a financial success for The Center, all while having a whole lot of fun!

What Makes These Rebels Different?

These trailblazers don’t just talk about change—they make it happen. Through creative fundraisers like live music events, Pickleball tournaments, and Halloween “Trunk or Treat” gatherings, they’re proving that doing good doesn’t have to be boring. This isn’t your average bake sale or silent auction. It’s a call to arms for those who believe that fun and impact can go hand in hand. And it’s working. Every dollar raised helps provide life-changing services for kids and their families, from early intervention programs to innovative sensory tools that open new worlds of possibility.

A Legacy of Compassion, A Future of Possibility

In 1945, a group of visionary women in Columbus, Ohio, formed what would become The Childhood League. Their goal was simple but ambitious: to help children in need. This grassroots movement began with a mission to serve young children with developmental delays and provide essential support to their families. What started as a modest community effort quickly grew into a groundbreaking organization that continues to change lives over eight decades later.

The Early Years: A Vision for Change

In the post-World War II era, early childhood intervention was a relatively new concept. These pioneering women saw an unmet need in their community and resolved to address it. They understood that every child deserved a chance to thrive, regardless of their challenges. From the beginning, The League partnered with educators, medical professionals, and community leaders to create programs tailored to the unique needs of children with developmental delays.

Initially, the League’s work was carried out in local homes, churches, and community centers. These early efforts laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the Childhood League Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide comprehensive care and education to children and their families.

Building Momentum: The 1950s and 1960s

As the League’s reputation grew, so did its impact. By the 1950s, the organization was recognized as a leader in early childhood intervention in Central Ohio. During this time, the League introduced groundbreaking programs that combined play-based learning with therapeutic techniques, helping children build critical skills while fostering their natural curiosity.

The 1960s brought further innovation. The League began offering parent education workshops, equipping families with the knowledge and tools to support their children’s development at home. This holistic approach became a hallmark of the League’s work, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between educators, therapists, and families.

A Growing Legacy: The 1970s to the 1990s

In the 1970s, the League expanded its services to include a broader range of therapies, such as speech and language support, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. These additions ensured that children received comprehensive care tailored to their specific needs. The League also established new partnerships with local businesses and civic organizations, fostering a sense of community involvement that remains central to its mission today.

By the 1980s, the Childhood League Center was a well-established institution in Columbus, known for its innovative programs and dedicated staff. The League’s annual fundraisers, including gala events and community fairs, became highlights of the local social calendar, raising vital funds to support its programs.

The 1990s saw the League embrace new challenges and opportunities. Advances in early childhood education and therapy prompted the organization to update its programs, ensuring they remained at the forefront of best practices. The League also began exploring ways to reach more families, including those in underserved communities, through outreach and advocacy initiatives.

The Modern Era: 2000 and Beyond

The 21st century has been a period of growth and transformation for The Childhood League. In 2003, the League relocated to its current facility, a cutting-edge center designed to meet the diverse needs of children and families. This new space allowed the League to expand its programs and serve more families than ever before.

Technology has also played a significant role in the League’s evolution. From innovative sensory tools to digital resources for parents, the League has embraced new ways to enhance its services and connect with the community. Today, the Center offers a wide range of programs, including early intervention services, inclusive classrooms, and specialized therapies. Each program is designed to help children achieve their full potential while supporting families every step of the way.

A Community Effort: The Role of Volunteers and Supporters

Throughout its history, The Childhood League has been powered by the dedication of its members, volunteers, and supporters. Each year, new women join the League, committing to a five-year term of service. These members bring diverse skills and perspectives, united by a shared passion for the League’s mission. Their efforts include organizing fundraisers, volunteering at the Center, and advocating for policies that support early childhood development.

The League’s community events, such as Battle Columbus, Trunk or Treat, and the Pickleball Tournament, not only raise funds but also foster a sense of connection among participants. These events are a testament to the League’s belief in the power of community to create positive change.

Looking Ahead: The Future of The Childhood League

As The Childhood League approaches its 80th anniversary, its commitment to innovation and impact remains as strong as ever. The League continues to adapt to the changing needs of children and families, ensuring its programs remain relevant and effective. Plans for the future include expanding outreach efforts, strengthening partnerships with local organizations, and exploring new ways to serve the Columbus community.

The League’s legacy is one of compassion, determination, and hope. It is a story of ordinary people coming together to achieve extraordinary things. And while much has changed since 1945, the heart of the League’s mission remains the same: to give every child the opportunity to thrive.

Why We Serve

At the heart of everything the League does is a deep belief in the power of community. Every event, every fundraiser, every volunteer effort is driven by a shared mission: to give every child a chance to reach their full potential.

For the Battle Columbus crew, this mission is personal. Each member has a story about why they serve, whether it’s seeing the impact firsthand or simply wanting to give back to a cause that matters. Their passion, dedication, and hard work make all the difference.

Meet the Women Leading Us Into Battle

Behind every great mission are the people who make it happen. In this case, five powerhouse women have stepped up to lead the charge into this year’s epic “Battle.” Their talents and tenacity are the backbone of this movement, and they bring a mix of creativity, grit, and humor to everything they do.

Katie Buzzacco: Chair of Battle Columbus

Katie Buzzacco is a creative force, blending her artistic flair with an unmatched knack for throwing unforgettable events. As an artist and designer by trade and a music lover by nature, Katie took last year’s Battle Columbus to the next level as the lead on Attendee Experience, turning the event into an immersive, interactive spectacle. Now, as this year’s Chair, she’s running the show, combining her passion for music with a deep commitment to the children and families served by the Childhood League Center.

When the League needed a fresh approach to fundraising, Katie joined forces with Lauren Colantoni to introduce Battle of the Cover Bands Columbus—an event that celebrates live music, supports local talent, and uplifts Central Ohio children. Her background as a Textile Print Design Manager gave her a sharp eye for creating experiences that resonate deeply, both visually and emotionally.

Music has always been Katie’s lifeline. From The Beach Boys to No Doubt, The Killers, and Alabama Shakes, her love of music has been a constant source of inspiration. Now, she’s using that passion to help orchestrate an event that’s equal parts entertainment and advocacy.

For Katie, life is about timing, a little luck, and a whole lot of rock ‘n’ roll. And when it comes to Battle Columbus, she’s ready to bring the house down once again.

Lauren Colantoni: The Maestro of Battle Columbus

Lauren Colantoni doesn’t just organize events—she orchestrates them. As the founder of Battle Columbus and last year’s chair, she transformed a simple idea into a rock ‘n’ roll revolution for a cause. Though she’s officially graduated from her time as a League parent, Lauren couldn’t resist returning for an encore, now stepping into the role of Head of Production—a title as bold as the riffs she’s been chasing since childhood.

Her vision for Battle Columbus began like all the best ideas do: on a daydreaming walk with a killer playlist. When the opening chords of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” transported her back to her dad’s Ford Explorer, Lauren’s lightbulb moment hit. That nostalgia-fueled burst of creativity led to the event we know today—a fundraiser built to last, bringing talent to the stage and making waves for a cause that means everything to her.

With over half a decade of dedication to The Childhood League Center, Lauren has a legacy of leadership, marketing, and development behind her. Now, she’s doubling down, finding talent, taking names, and proving that music really is a living consciousness that brings people together.

Her anthem? Turning passion into action—and making sure Columbus rocks while doing it.

Bess Ely: The Sponsorship Dynamo Behind Battle Columbus

Bess Ely isn’t just securing sponsorships for Battle Columbus—she’s revolutionizing the game. With an unmatched passion and tireless dedication, Bess has been working behind the scenes to ensure this year’s event is nothing short of legendary.

Her connection to the cause is deeply personal. For Bess, The Childhood League Center isn’t just an organization—it’s a lifeline. In 2018, she arrived in Columbus with her two boys, Charlie and Kurt, seeking a fresh start after an unimaginable chapter in her life. The League became her family’s anchor, offering transformative therapy and unwavering support when they needed it most.

Now, Bess is giving back tenfold, blending her professional expertise with a heart for advocacy. With the support of her company, Servpro, she’s not only bringing sponsors on board but also contributing SEO services, event materials, and even photo backdrops for the night of the event. Her relentless drive and creative vision are key ingredients in making Battle Columbus a success.

Stay tuned as Bess continues to crush it—because when it comes to supporting her community, she’s all in.

Lauren Potulski: Silent Auction – Battle Columbus

As a proud second-year member of the Childhood League, Lauren Potulski brings both personal passion and unstoppable energy to the mission. Her introduction to the League came through her friend Emily, but her connection deepened when her own family benefited from the League’s life-changing resources.

When her 2-year-old daughter faced a speech delay, the team at the Childhood League Center stepped in with expert care and support. From speech therapy with the incredible SLP Courtney to tools that helped her family foster growth at home, the transformation was extraordinary. In just two months, Lauren’s daughter went from barely speaking to proudly saying “Mama and Dada”—and she hasn’t stopped chatting since.

Lauren channels her gratitude into action, spearheading the Silent Auction for Battle Columbus. Tirelessly working to procure must-have experience packages, she’s been instrumental in helping raise funds for initiatives like the center’s new motion projector, which will be unveiled and ready for play on event night.

Lauren’s dedication to amplifying voices—both figuratively and literally—is a testament to her belief in the League’s mission. She’s a true advocate, #forthekids, and a vital part of the Battle Columbus team.

Emily Rust: Silent Auction - Battle Columbus

Emily is a dedicated healthcare professional and mother of three, two of whom have special needs due to rare diseases. Her journey navigating the complexities of disability services and early intervention has fueled her passion for supporting families facing similar challenges.

A long-time volunteer, Emily is now an active member of The Childhood League Center, where she’s committed to helping children with unique abilities thrive.

In her third year with the organization and first year on The League Operating Committee, she serves as Co-Chair for the Silent Auction Committee for Battle Columbus, combining her love of service with advocacy for children’s development.

Here are just a few of the ways League members give back:

    •    The Giving Tree: Every holiday season, the League sets up a Giving Tree with Abercrombie and Fitch to ensure that every child, their siblings, and their caregivers at the Center that qualifies for financial aid receives a gift. Volunteers shop, wrap, and deliver presents, bringing holiday cheer to families who need it most.

    •    Parent Support: The League goes above and beyond by offering child care so parents can shop, run errands, or simply take a break during the holidays. It’s a small gesture that makes a big difference.

    •    Poster-Making Parties: To celebrate the last day of school, League members host poster-making parties, creating colorful, personalized signs for each child. It’s a fun way to mark the end of the year and make kids feel special.

    •    Center Volunteers: League members regularly volunteer at the Childhood League Center, helping with everything from classroom activities to special events. Their presence enriches the experience for both kids and families.

ANNUAL FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

The Anual Fundraising Campaign (AFC) raises money to continue to provide exceptional services for the hundreds of children The Center helps in our community. League Members are encouraged to raise $1000 each year and they accomplish this effort through donations, educating at wine tastings, partnering with art workshops, hosting parties with drag queens, planning 5K fun runs, supporting dine to donates, planning bar crawls, teaching group fitness classes, and more! A favorite event that The League looks forward to every fall is the annual Golf Outing. The League's creativity and collective enthusiasm make AFC fundraising not only highly impactful, but incredibly fun as well.

SOCIAL

As a League Member, social opportunities are great ways to build connections with Columbus industry leaders and strengthen our friendships with each other. Elevate Women is The League's leadership development series that hosts panels featuring powerful and supportive women leaders from the Columbus community. The League also looks forward to the annual Winter Social, fall tailgates, and planning the monthly membership meetings.

The League thrives because of people like you—people who care, who want to give back, and who believe in the power of community. Whether you want to volunteer, attend an event, or become a sponsor, there are countless ways to get involved.

ASSISTING BOARDS AND A COMMUNITY LEGACY OF GIVING

After an incredible five years as a League Member, many continue on with a lifetime of support for The League as an Assisting Board Member. Each graduating League class may join an Assisting Board, which ensures invitations to special events. Additionally, AB Members continue to meet together as friends with their own events. They organize special projects for The Center and continue to support the mission through financial gifts and advocacy.

Final Note: A Thank You to Our Community

None of this would be possible without the incredible support of the Columbus community. To everyone who’s attended an event, donated, or volunteered: thank you. You’re helping create a brighter future for children, one smile, one song, and one small act of kindness at a time.
